These special circumstances can bring their own set of issues and/or challenges to a marriage. As the NHMRC Web site expands, we will add additional resources for all manner of special circumstances. Couples as Stepparents

Step parenting can put stress on a marriage in many ways. One way is that when stress and conflict boil over, there is a tendency among stepfamilies to take sides along biological lines, leaving one spouse in the cold. For this and other reasons, a strong, unified marriage is essential to having a functioning stepfamily. Please see below for resources on step parenting and marriage.

Grandparents raising children

Grandparents raising grandchildren as the primary caretakers are on the rise. About 4.5 million children are living in households headed by grandparents and 2.4 million grandparents are taking on primary responsibility for their grandchildren's basic needs. 1Many of these grandparents have assumed this responsibility without the parent of the child being in the home. This can be wonderful and fulfilling, but it can also bring emotional and financial burdens for grandparents and cause stress in their marriages.
