Presented by the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center on March 25, 2009, this one hour, 30 minutes webinar focuses on how severe economic stress affects couple relationships and children, strategies Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood educators can use to help couples cope with economic stress, and how Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood program providers can coordinate with the Workforce Investment Act to offer their economically distressed clients job and other financial services support. The first presentation is provided by Dr. William Bailey an Associate Professor at the School of Human Environmental Sciences, University of Arkansas. He discusses the impact of severe economic stress, signs the recession is causing couples and families distress, reasons money causes family conflict, the need for marriage educators to learn more about personal and family finance, and resources marriage educators can use. Financial and relationship education provided by the U.S. military is highlighted. The second presentation by Salena Webb Ebo, a Marriage/Relationship Educator in the Center for Self Sufficiency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, considers the types of relationship challenges faced by families who are economically distressed and specific strategies that can be used by marriage educators to help couples improve their communication skills, lower stress levels, and work together. The final presentation by Mr. Brent Orrell, senior fellow at ICF International, provides an overview of the Workforce Investment Act and one-stop career centers, and discusses how marriage educators can partner with local one-stop career centers. Answers to questions posed by webinar participants are also included, as well as a PowerPoint presentation and transcript.
