This book charts the stages of a couple’s journey together, and offers an analysis of the complex birth and development of intimate partnerships. The book identifies three distinct and recurring stages common to all enduring relationships. The first stage is described as a time of expansion and promise when each individual feels larger, more witty, and charming. The second stage is identified as a time of contraction in which individuals pull back into more habitual ways, enact or demand more stereotypical gender roles, and feel disappointed and betrayed. The third stage is explained as a time of resolution, when intimacy is renewed and each individual and become more complete by containing both their best and worst selves. The text explains how a couple’s identity is shaped by these three stages and the powerful cultural expectations of society, friends, and family. It analyzes how recurrent patterns are established, and the impact of gender issues, children, and serious crises. Finally, suggestions are offered for applying these concepts to relationships and managing periods of turmoil and transition. Case studies are provided throughout the chapters. 47 references.
