Presented by the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center on July 31, 2009, this 1 hour, 30 minutes webinar focuses on providing effective strategies for tailoring relationship education content to meet the needs of young adults and how marriage and relationship education programs can effectively market to singles. The first presentation by Dr. John Van Epp, developer of the PICK, Premarital Interpersonal Choices and Knowledge, a partner curriculum and the author of How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk. Dr. Epp discusses the template that lead young people to make decisions about relationships and the need to teach singles the characteristics of a healthy partner, partner selection and how to chose healthy partners, relationship development, and empower individuals to ensure their head and the heart work together. The use of a visual model to teach the dynamics of a relationship is discussed, and the Britney Spears and Kevin Federline relationship is used as an example of the pitfalls of an accelerated relationship. The second presentation by Mr. Charles Jackson, Public Relations Coordinator for the Alabama Community Healthy Marriage Initiative at Auburn University, discusses how best to market marriage and relationship education classes to post-high school aged singles. The importance of having teens work as peer facilitators and help develop marketing campaigns is stressed, and examples are cited of media campaigns that are successfully engaging youth. Strategies for media campaigns and for using different media outlets are discussed. Answers to questions posed by webinar participants are also included, as well as a PowerPoint presentation and transcript.
