This book is designed to help clinicians who work with individuals, couples, and families examine the legacies from the past using genograms. It provides a practical guide for creating a Multifocused Family Genogram (MFG) to give therapists both a systemic and a comprehensive assessment of a client system and a method to organize the data. The MFG is a combination of graphic tools that helps clinicians visually and conceptually organize and use psychohistorical information gathered during clinical interviews. With a Basic Genogram as the template, it summarizes the themes that result from constructing Focused Genograms. The text describes seven Focused Genograms: Attachments, Emotions, Anger, Gender, Sexuality, Romantic Love, and Culture. In addition to these Focused Genograms, the MFG includes a Family Map and a Time Line to broaden the scope provided by the traditional genogram. Part 1 of the book covers the basic elements of the MFG and the Focused Genograms. Chapters in Part 2 describe the key components of the MFG included in the Basic Genogram, the Family Map, and the Time Line. Part 3 describes the construction and unique aspects of each of the seven Focused Genograms and basic theoretical concepts underlying each of the Focused Genogram. A conclusion summaries the usefulness of the MFG in clinical practice and an appendix highlights two available computerized genogram programs. Numerous references.
