This book presents a process for transforming and enhancing couple relationships using Imago Relationship Therapy, a therapy based on a theory of couplehood and exercises for helping couples deepen and transform their relationship. Part 1 on the unconscious marriage discusses the mystery of attraction between couples, childhood wounds that impact relationships, the development of the imago (image) of the ideal mate, the components and pitfalls of romantic love, and the power struggle that occurs between couples. Part 2 highlights the conscious marriage, a marriage that helps individuals satisfy unmet childhood needs in positive ways. Chapters discuss techniques for rekindling romantic love, restoring a spirit of cooperation, replacing confrontation and criticism with a healing process of mutual growth and support, and converting pent-up frustration into empathy and understanding. The Couple’s Dialogue technique is described and includes mirroring, validation, and empathy. Strategies are also provided for increasing knowledge of yourself and your partner, creating a zone of safety, and containing rage. The final part of the book outlines a ten-week course in relationship therapy that includes step-by-step exercises to enhance relationships. 38 references.
