This Power Point presentation discusses findings on marriage and divorce rates and their relationship to poverty, and describes components of a marriage education program. It begins by sharing information on the characteristics of low-income marriages, cohabiting families, and single mothers. Reasons for not marrying and for divorce among low-income families are identified, and implications for marriage and relationship education are explored. A new relationship skills and decision making program for helping individuals achieve their goals in relationships, family, and marriage is then highlighted. The Within My Reach program focuses on: understanding relationships, risk, and choices; maintaining and building relationships; and moving forward toward goals within reach. Strategies used to enhance participant’s decision making about marriage partners are explained. 62 references.
