Presented by the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center on May 28, 2008, this webinar discusses key findings from a report that investigated the cost to U.S. taxpayers of high rates of divorce and unmarried childbearing at a national and State level. A presentation is offered by Dr. Ben Scafidi an associate professor and director of the Education Policy Center and the J. Whitney Bunty School of Business at Georgia College at State University, and lead investigator of the study. The methodology of the study is discussed and findings of the study are shared. Results indicate the cost of divorce and unwed childbearing to taxpayers is $112 billion per year. Reasons why the number underestimates the true costs are discussed, including the exclusion of the Earned Income Tax Credit program and costs related to special needs and remedial education programs. The cost benefit of funding marriage promotion programs is emphasized and statistics are shared that indicate Texas would save about $9 million a year if they could promote marriage rates by 3/10 of 1%. Answers to questions posed by webinar participants and a transcript of the webinar are included.
