This interview explores issues in domestic violence in Latino communities and the perspectives of Julia Perilla, a clinical community psychologist who conducts academic research and teaches at Georgia State University. She explains the impact of the environment on the individual and the need to approach interventions and research from a strengths perspective; how community psychologists understand the phenomenon of domestic violence; the use of a Latino ecological perspective to understand domestic violence in the Latino community; how domestic violence differs in the Latino community; reasons abused Latinas stay in abusive relationships; differences in domestic violence among immigrants and the impact of acculturation; the impact of culture and traditional gender role ideology on Hispanic communities and domestic violence; the role of the church in inadvertently supporting domestic violence in Latino communities; and key principles and components that should inform the design of domestic violence intervention services. Strategies that communities or States should use to address domestic violence prevention in Latino communities are also discussed. 5 references.
