Presented by the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center on January 21, 2009, this 1 hour, 30 minutes webinar shares research findings on the association between healthy marriages, relationship quality, and positive health outcomes in children and adults, discusses practical strategies for using the research to assist providers with outreach and marketing their programs, and provides strategies for incorporating health as an essential component in healthy marriage curricula and programming. The first presentation by Dr. Jana Staton, Director of the Marriage Works Learning Center in Missoula, Montana, discusses the link between marriage and physical health, factors in marriage that affect health, the differences in survival rates among married and unmarried people, and factors in marriage that provide health benefits. The impact of marriage on the health of children, young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults is described, as well as the risks of ending a marriage and the link between heart disease and marital quality. The second presentation by Dr. William Doherty, Director of Family Social Science and the Director of Citizen Professional Center at the University of Minnesota, discusses strategies marriage and relationship education providers can use to link with health programs. Answers to questions posed by webinar participants are also included, as well as a PowerPoint presentation and transcript.
