This report details the activities and accomplishments of the Healthy Marriage Initiative (HMI), a program launched in 2002 by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) within the Department of Health and Human Services to support the President’s goal of increasing healthy marriages by focusing attention and action on strengthening marriages and preparing interested individuals and couples for healthy marriage. In supporting healthy marriage, ACF seeks to improve the well-being of children and families. The mission of the initiative, its goals, and structure of the program are discussed, and the benefits of marriage are explained. ACF-funded HMI demonstration programs and grant activities are then identified that have been funded through the following ACF offices: the Administration for Native Americans, the Children’s Bureau, the Office of Child Support Enforcement, the Office of Community Services, and the Office of Refugee Resettlement. A chart of the funding levels for each office is provided, along with descriptive summaries of the grants supported by each program office. Programs funded under the Children’s Bureau include child welfare training grants fro promoting healthy marriage and family formation, post-adoption services and marriage education, and Safe and Stable Family Grants. Profiles are then provided of the African American Marriage Initiative and the Hispanic Healthy Marriage Initiative. ACF-funded HMI research is discussed, and other HMI-related partnerships and projects are highlighted. Lessons learned during the initiative are shared, and a list of HMI resources and materials is provided. 9 references.
