This fact sheet reviews research findings to explore the impact of a mutual child have on a new stepfamily marriage, why couples elect to have a mutual child, and what effect the mutual child has on the relationships within the stepfamily. Findings indicate having a mutual child reduces the risk of divorce, while simultaneously negatively affecting the marital quality or happiness of the adults. In addition, studies found a primary reason for having the mutual child was the hope that the child would cement the bond of marriage. Partners also felt an obligation to new spouses that had no children. Finally, studies indicate parents saw having a mutual child as a positive influence on their relationship with their stepchildren, however, older stepchildren commonly saw the new child as extra baggage.
