This fact sheet explains strategies family caregivers can use to prevent and cope with depression. Strategies include reaching out for support in providing care, determining commitments, developing positive meanings about providing care, and protecting intimate relationships. Caregivers are urged to plan ahead and wear ID jewelry to ensure care is continued if the caregiver is injured, recognize depression and seek medical help and social support, and to gently approach other family caregivers if they show signs of depression.
