This paper is designed to assist medical providers who encounter victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Guidelines are provided on complying with mandatory reporting laws, interviewing patients, providing messages of support, assessing current and past abuse, assessing long-term danger, providing intervention services, documenting findings, and providing follow-up care. Statistics on the incidence of IPV are shared and the impact of IPV on health is discussed.
