This book provides an overview of the principles and programs for strengthening and enriching marriage. It begins with a discussion on the importance of healthy marriages for society, the need for marriage enrichment, and foundations and assumptions of marriage enrichment. Chapter 2 summarizes the history of marriage enrichment and its theoretical foundations, and Chapter 3 emphasizes marriage as a major key to the quality of families and society. Part 2 on marriage enrichment programs includes chapters that describe the major dimensions of marriage enrichment programs, provide brief descriptions of some of the better known programs, and summarizes tools and techniques used in marriage enrichment programs. Research findings on marriage enrichment programs are shared in Part 3. Chapters examine evidence from many sources that indicate marriage enrichment provides positive benefits to couples, considers ways to measure program quality in relation to changes in couples, and identifies essential elements for enrichment changes in couples. The major dimensions of couple commitment, program structure, leader qualities, use of homework, and interactions with therapy in relation to marriage enrichment are explored as major elements that produce positive change in participants. The final part includes chapters that describe ways that professionals and couples can take action at primary, secondary, and tertiary outreach levels to strengthen marriages and families. Chapters consider how enrichment and therapy are interrelated, explore issues in leading and providing marriage enrichment events to all types of couples, describes the rapidly emerging couple-to-couple mentor and friendship dimensions of marriage enrichment, summarize possibilities for outreach programs that can change the community and the national marriage climate, and address social context levels of marriage and family mentoring and support.
