It begins by providing background information on President Bush’s goal of increasing healthy marriages by focusing attention and action on strengthening marriages and preparing couples for a healthy marriage. The specific goals of the Healthy Marriage Initiative are outlined, the controversy over the initiative, and factors fueling public interest in healthy marriages are then discussed. Reasons why some women and men choose not to marry are explored, and examples of Healthy Marriage grant programs in Nebraska and Oklahoma are provided.
