This report discusses the activities and outcomes of a study that investigated the demographic qualities/characteristics of Oklahoma mothers (n=500) and fathers (n=300) having babies funded by Medicaid. The study gathered information on relationship quality, explored why couples have made the choice to be married, and assessed interest and motivation in couples for attending marriage/relationship education classes. The background and purpose of this study along with the study’s methodology are presented in Chapter 1, and a summary of key findings are presented in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 presents detailed findings from the study. The findings are organized first by study objective and then by couple marital status. Lastly, a comparison of married to unmarried Oklahoma couples is made. Chapter 4 of the report contains policy implications and suggestions for future research. Results from the study found: the mothers were typically between the ages of 20 and 26; about 80% of unmarried couples considered themselves in a relationship at the time of the survey; parents reported overall high levels of relationship quality; most married parents (about 70%) did not have premarital preparation; 50% of married mothers and 55% of married fathers said that they would be interested in participating in couples’ workshops to strengthen their relationship; and 53% of unmarried mothers and 60% of unmarried fathers said that they would be interested in participating.
