Presented by the National Healthy Marriage Resource Center on September 24, 2008, this 1 hour, 30 minutes webinar shares research findings on the effects of deployment and reintegration on military marriages and their families, the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) on military couples and their families, and how marriage education and marital counseling can help military families. The first presentation is offered by Dr. Shelly McDermott from Purdue Uni¬versity, and discusses the incidence of military deployment, the impact of deployment on health, deployment and marital distress, resilience in military families, and challenges couples face when re-entering the marriage. The second presentation is offered by Katherine Robredo, Director of the Rocky Mountain Family Academy at the Front Range Institute. This presentation discusses the impact of current wars on service members, the effects of PTSD on marriages, the impact on children, the intergenerational transmission of trauma, and mental health issues for veterans. Symptoms and treatment for PTSD and TBI are explained, as well as components of a comprehensive assessment of veterans and their families. The final presentation by Chaplain Ronald Martin Minnick, Joint National Guard Chaplain Service, highlights the Strong Bonds Programs for strengthening couples, single soldiers, and families. Answers to questions posed by webinar participants are also included, as well as a PowerPoint presentation and transcript.
