This paper begins by reporting results from a 2001 on-line survey that asked people how parishes could improve their efforts to help laity respond to their Christian call in the world. The survey found that found 20,000 of 60,000 respondents recommended parishes improve how they help couples grow in their commitment to married life. In addition, respondents offered suggestions that ranged from preaching and teaching on family issues to support groups or retreat programs for couples to a system of older couples mentoring younger ones. Strategies that parishes can use to strengthen marriages are discussed and include: make the marital vocation more visible by regularly including prayers for couples and families in the General Intercessions at Mass; in addition to receiving high quality marriage preparation from a priest or deacon and a team of experienced couples, engaged couples could be recognized and blessed publicly during their preparation; start a peer ministry for married couples to help them live their vocation; provide access to credentialed professionals; and provide retreat programs for couples that are adapted to busy schedules.
