This book describes the seven natural stages of marriage and provides relationship boosters to strengthen the marriage relationship. It begins by emphasizing the rewards of marriage, the marriage timeline, and the benefits of understanding each stage. Part 1 then reports the results of a survey of 1,001 adults, provides statistics on married adults, includes quizzes for the seven stages, and discusses universal tips and rules for fixing a marriage. Chapters in Part 2 explain the seven stages of marriage, provide stage missions, and include exercises and quizzes. The seven stages are: the passion stage; the realization stage when passion fades and couples begin to discover each other’s true selves for the first time; the rebellion stage when each person yearns for a return to freedom an asserts his or her own self-interest; the cooperation stage when children, increased domestic responsibilities, and careers transform lovers into business partners; the reunion stage when children leave and couples reunite as friends and lovers; the explosion stage when illness, job loss, and family crises can all happen at any time; and the completion stage. The final part provides tips for couples contemplating marriage, describes how the seven stages apply in second marriages, discusses seeking support from counselors and enrichment programs, and summarizes findings from the survey. The text closes with a list of additional marriage resources.
