Part of a series of videos for mental health professionals, this 73-minute video and manual address therapeutic treatment for angry couples. In the video, Dr. Susan Heitler demonstrates a conflict-based treatment approach with a couple seeking help for their fighting. During five reenacted sessions, Dr. Heitler pinpoints the reasons for the anger, limits its hostile expression, and teaches the couple more successful ways of interacting. Following an introduction, the manual presents the theoretical framework for a conflict-focused approach, including an overview of important work on conflict and negotiation from fields outside of psychology. Section 3 of the manual describes the treatment model that has been developed for working with couples and individuals in conflict, and Section 4 applies the conflict-focused treatment approach specifically to anger management. The final section applies the conflict-focused approach to the specific case highlighted in the video. It provides a session-by-session, intervention-by-intervention commentary on the couple’s treatment. It also summarizes clinical developments between the reenacted sessions. An appendix provides an overview of the five reenacted video sessions. A continuing education test for the program is also included. 27 references.
