This supplement provides chapter notes that explore the following marriage paradox: while successful, lifelong marriage is a highly valued goal for most people, the number of individuals who are married has declined and the proportion successfully married has declined even more. Note then examine the limitations within the received view of marriage scholarship, including the lack of theorizing about data, lack of cross-fertilization, lack of integration and theory development, the atheoretical myth, and description without explanation.
